Morouj, the artistic pseudonym of Mohamed Kadri, emerges from the bustling streets of Cairo, Egypt, as a beacon of tranquil and introspective ambient music. Born into a family distant from the world of music, with a banker father and a teacher mother, Kadri carved his own musical path. His journey began fifteen years ago, fueled by his interactions with local band members and the strumming of his first guitar. Covering classic metal bands, he gradually transitioned to a distinct sound, deeply influenced by the shoegaze movement of the ’90s and 2000s, and the emotive landscapes of post-rock bands like This Will Destroy You and Sigur Rós.

Morouj’s style is a unique blend of the profound emotional depth of post-rock and the immersive, cinematic human experience, all cradled within the serene arms of ambient music. His minimalistic approach, utilizing a minilab controller for soft synths and an electric guitar, creates deep sonic textures. These soundscapes are a mix of distorted guitars and expansive, dreamy synths, designed to transport listeners to a state of peace and comfort.

Influenced by Japanese ambient producers like Chihei Hatakeyama and Michiro Aoyama, as well as the late Ryuichi Sakamoto, Kadri’s work as Morouj has matured into a refined expression of ambient artistry. He often begins his creative process by capturing natural sounds on his phone, such as the rustling of trees or the whisper of the wind. These recordings form the emotional core around which he builds his music, layering chord progressions, melodies, and reverb-heavy guitar alongside his soft synth sounds.

Despite the lack of an ambient music scene in Egypt, Kadri remains hopeful of performing live someday. His personal philosophy is deeply rooted in the emotive power of music. Inspired by the sweet sadness and satisfying emotions elicited by post-rock’s repeated melodies and climactic build-ups, Morouj seeks to evoke similar feelings within the tranquil, quiet realm of ambient music. His aim is to provide listeners with a space for comfort and relaxation, allowing emotions to surface and flow through his music. With each composition, Morouj invites his audience to embark on a journey of introspection and serenity, amidst the chaos of everyday life.
