Morouj

Cairo-based ambient artist Morouj weaves reverb-soaked guitar, soft synths, and organic field recordings into slow, cinematic soundscapes. Drawing influence from post-rock and Japanese ambient, his music invites deep listening—offering a space for reflection, stillness, and emotional resonance shaped by the quiet details of the natural world.

Morouj is the ambient music project of Mohamed Kadri, an Egyptian composer and producer based in Cairo whose work blends reverb-soaked guitar, soft synth textures, and field recordings into immersive, introspective soundscapes. Drawing on the emotional intensity of post-rock and the slow-blooming structures of shoegaze, Morouj creates ambient compositions that feel both expansive and deeply personal—offering listeners a gentle refuge from the noise of everyday life.

Firmly rooted in the organic ambient tradition, Morouj’s work often begins with sounds captured on his phone: rustling leaves, distant birdsong, the whisper of wind against a wall. These nature-infused elements serve as the emotional bedrock for layered pieces built around melodic guitar, drifting pads, and minimal digital instrumentation. Inspired by artists like Chihei Hatakeyama, Michiru Aoyama, and the late Ryuichi Sakamoto, Kadri uses a minilab controller and electric guitar to shape quiet, contemplative works that resonate with both emotional gravity and a sense of spacious calm.

Though Cairo is far from a hub for ambient music, Kadri has forged a devoted international audience. As of August 2025, Morouj has over 170,000 monthly listeners on Spotify and more than 680,000 streams per month. His music is frequently featured in algorithmic playlists that showcase ambient music with nature sounds and slow, meditative listening, and is currently gaining traction on listener-curated playlists dedicated to calming, nature-infused sound environments.

Morouj is signed to Signal Alchemy, a Canadian independent label that champions organic ambient artists working at the intersection of ambient, neoclassical, and environmental sound. Through his steady output and distinctive sound, Kadri has become a notable presence in the global ambient landscape, quietly expanding the genre from within.

Whether heard through headphones on a solitary walk or played softly in a room at rest, Morouj’s music invites deep listening—offering a kind of emotional clarity and warmth that lingers long after the last note fades.
